It is located in the southern portion of the island of Luzon on the eastern shore of Manila Bay. It lies between the Central Luzon and Calabarzon regions bordering the provinces of Bulacan in the north, Rizal in the east, and Laguna and Cavite in the south. Metro Manila is a collection of cities and municipality surrounding the capital city of Manila. Although formed only in 1975 from a presidential decree creating ''Metropolitan Manila'', its history can be traced back to 1571 with the establishment of the Province of Manila during the Spanish colonial period. With a population of 11,855,975 in 2010, Metro Manila is the largest metropolitan area in the Philippines and the seventh most populous metropolitan area in Asia.
